Today marks the release of Cece Bell’s incredible graphic novel, El Deafo. It’s a memoir about how Cece suffered hearing loss when she was four years old, wore special hearing aids and learned to lip read, and her journey of acceptance and fitting in and finding true friends through her elementary school years.
I don’t get around to recommending graphic novels very often (although I have done so in the past), but every now and then one comes along that I can’t help but want to tell my readers about! I think fans of Smile will especially adore this book, its star and its message. The art is also adorable, and the story is full of humor.
El Deafo is my favorite graphic novel of 2014, and Cece is one of my favorite people ever. Go read her book!
